WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A FULL CAR DETAIL?

Updated 2026-09-10 · 5 min read

A full detail covers the entire vehicle inside and out, takes four to six hours, and finishes with paint protection. Here is what each stage actually involves.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A full detail is a complete interior clean plus a decontamination exterior wash, finished with a protective sealant. On a typical sedan or crossover it takes four to six hours. A car wash, by comparison, is fifteen minutes and touches only the outside surfaces.

THE INTERIOR HALF

Interior work is the slower half and where most of the visible difference comes from.

  • Everything vacuumed: carpets, mats, seats, seams, rails, trunk
  • Vents, buttons and console gaps cleared with air and detail brushes
  • Hard surfaces cleaned and given a non-greasy protective dressing
  • Leather cleaned and conditioned; fabric extracted where it needs it
  • Interior glass polished last, so it stays streak-free
  • Door jambs and sills done, which is what separates a detail from a clean

THE EXTERIOR HALF

Exterior work is about removing contamination without adding scratches. Wheels and tires first, then a foam soak, then a two-bucket contact wash. Iron removal and a clay treatment pull out embedded fallout that soap leaves behind — this is the step that makes the paint feel like glass rather than fine sandpaper.

Drying is done with forced air and plush towels, never a squeegee or a rough cloth, and the car is finished with a sealant that protects for months.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED

A full detail does not remove scratches. Swirl marks and dull, hazy paint need machine polishing, which is a separate service. Nor does it fix chips, cracked trim or torn upholstery. A good detailer will tell you which of your issues are cleaning problems and which are correction or repair problems before taking your money.

QUICK ANSWERS

How long does a full car detail take?
Four to six hours for most sedans and crossovers. Large SUVs, trucks, pet hair and heavy soiling add time.
Is a full detail worth it before selling a car?
Usually yes. A clean, protected car photographs better and inspects better, and buyers routinely adjust their offer over things a detail resolves.
